Year 10 Geographers Get Hands-On at Carding Mill Valley!

4th April 2025Rowan Ridley
Our Year 10 Geography students had a fantastic day out this week, swapping the classroom for the beautiful scenery of Carding Mill Valley to support the learning for the GCSE Geography course. It was a brilliant chance to see some of the things we’ve been learning about in action!

The sun was shining, which made exploring the river even better. The students got involved in measuring how fast the water was flowing at different points, as well as checking out how wide and deep it was. It was really interesting to see how these things changed along the river.

They also had a go at something called rock profiling. This basically meant getting up close to the riverbanks and seeing how the rocks and soil were different at each spot – helping them understand how the river erodes and drops things off in different places.

After all that investigating by the water, it was time for a bit of a hike up the Long Mynd. The views from the top were amazing, and seeing the waterfall was a real highlight. It definitely brought to life how powerful water can be in shaping the landscape.

It wasn’t all hard work though! We also got to see some lovely wildlife, including some super cute newborn lambs, a few wild ponies wandering about, and lots of friendly dogs enjoying their walks. It made for a really enjoyable day out in nature.

A big thank you to Mr Petrie, Mrs Hill, Mrs Llewellyn, and Miss Rowland for making the trip happen. It was a great way for our Year 10s to get out of the classroom and experience their Geography lessons in a really fun and practical way. Days like these make learning so much more memorable!

Exciting News: Our Library Receives the Brilliant Box of Books!

24th March 2025Rowan Ridley

We are delighted to share that our school has been selected—out of hundreds of secondary schools—to receive the Brilliant Box of Books, a generous gift from Read for Good, a branch of Scholastic dedicated to inspiring young readers.

This special box is filled with a diverse range of books across different genres and age groups, ensuring that every student can find something they love. The books were gifted to encourage the joy of reading and the excitement of receiving books as presents.

One of our enthusiastic Year 9 students, Beatrice Buzzing, has been volunteering with our librarian, Mrs. Smith, as part of her Duke of Edinburgh award. She has been running her own book group, and they were thrilled to open the prize! Since then, the group has been busy selecting books and distributing them to students from Year 7 to Sixth Form.

Additionally, our top ten most dedicated library users have each received a specially chosen book from the collection as a reward for their love of reading.

We are incredibly grateful for this wonderful opportunity to enhance our school’s reading community and can’t wait to see our students dive into these fantastic books! ✨

A Taste of France: Immersive French Breakfast Experience! ☕

24th March 2025Rowan Ridley

Today, our Y9, Y10, and Y11 pupils embarked on a truly immersive French breakfast experience with Miss. Blanchette and Mr. White and what a fantastic morning it was!

From the moment they arrived, students were transported into a fully French-speaking environment. They confidently ordered drinks and breakfast items entirely in French, practised essential restaurant vocabulary, and even tackled realistic role-play scenarios just like in a GCSE exam.

The highlight? Enjoying a delicious French breakfast! Some adventurous pupils even embraced the French tradition of dunking their croissants and pain au chocolat into steaming bowls of hot chocolate—délicieux!

To celebrate their achievements, every pupil received a certificate, marking their success in expanding their language skills and cultural knowledge. A huge bravo to all who took part—you made us proud!

Restoring Nature at Smestow Valley! – Day Two

24th March 2025Rowan Ridley

Restoring Nature at Smestow Valley!

Here are some highlights from the second and final day of our incredible pond restoration project with Eco Club, Severn Trent, and Friends of Smestow Valley!

Today, our hardworking team tackled overgrown brambles and vegetation that were blocking the bridge, clearing the way for much-needed repairs. We also collected a significant amount of litter, making the area safer and more welcoming for wildlife.

As a special science bonus, our pupils had the chance to test water quality using Severn Trent’s equipment—great news: no pollution was detected! With the area now cleared, we’re hopeful that wildlife will flourish. Later this year, we plan to involve pupils in further water quality testing and wildlife surveys with guidance from expert ecologists.

A huge thank you to Severn Trent, the James Beattie Charitable Trust, and Councillor Nasim for their generous support, which will allow us to repair the bridge and continue improving this fantastic habitat.

Stay tuned for more updates on our conservation efforts!

St Edmund’s Students Contribute to Woodland Trust Project at Little Kinvaston School

24th March 2025Rowan Ridley

On Thursday, March 13th, students from St Edmund’s took part in a meaningful environmental initiative, joining a Woodland Trust Project to plant 300 tree saplings at Little Kinvaston School. This project is part of a larger effort to expand native woodlands and create tree-rich habitats that will benefit nature, the climate, and local communities.

Little Kinvaston School, an independent alternative provision school in South Staffordshire, opened in September 2024. It provides support for young people facing Social, Emotional, and Mental Health challenges or those at risk of permanent exclusion from mainstream education. It is a developing ‘Forest’ School and also houses a number of rescue animals.

By participating in this project, St Edmund’s students not only contributed to a greener future but also had the opportunity to engage in a hands-on, impactful experience that supports both environmental sustainability and the well-being of their peers.

World Book Day Celebrations at St Ed’s.

6th March 2025Rowan Ridley

On World Book Day, St Edmunds celebrated the magic of reading with a fun-filled day of literary-themed activities. The staff and students came together to celebrate their favorite characters and the joy of books.

Our teachers truly embraced the spirit of the day by dressing up as iconic characters. Ms. Alsop wowed everyone by dressing as Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games, ready to take on the Mockingjay’s challenge. Miss Ridley and Miss Stokes were unmissable as they transformed into Where’s Wally characters, bringing a playful twist to the day. And, not to be outdone, Mr. Langford entered the festivities as a mighty dragon, perhaps inspired by the fantasy tales that have captured our imaginations for generations.

World Book Day is always a great reminder of how stories can bring us together, ignite our imaginations, and inspire us to read more. It was a fantastic celebration, and we can’t wait to see how we top it next year!
