Assistant to the Deputy Mayor of London Visits St Edmund’s

3rd July 2019Mrs D Curtis

James Potts took time out from his busy day job, as Assistant to the Deputy Mayor of London, to speak with the sixth formers about his career pathway.

Since leaving St Edmund’s, James went on to achieve a Bachelor of Arts, Politics, at Nottingham University. He then became a Parliamentary Assistant in the House of Commons before becoming a Research and Support Officer in the Greater London Authority.

James went onto speak to the sixth formers about his St Edmunds experience and how it lead him to such a glamorous career, regularly meeting with politicians. He is due to meet Jeremy Corbyn tomorrow.  James talked about the implications of social media and twitter in the world of politics. He touched upon the issue of knife crime and media portrayal.

James was delighted to learn that Adeel Khan has a work placement arranged at the Labour Office for the MP for Wolverhampton South West, Eleanor Smith.

Mrs Hazeldine, Principal, said, “We are extremely proud of James’ achievements”.

Black Country Museum

2nd July 2019Miss A Kane

Earlier some Year 7 students went to the Black Country Museum to find out about life during the industrial revolution. They visited the mines – which thankfully were safe, albeit very dark .They saw statues of miners working hard in coal pits to get the little money they were paid as a wage and saw the dangers that the miners faced.  As well as this they visited a methodist chapel in which we found out how they gave free health care.

In addition, they went to many Victorian shops and went to the local school. They learnt about Victorian currency and met Mr Griffins who treated us like traditional victorian pupils – apart from the caning and physical harm!  They also learnt about the types of medicines and the lack of gender equality in pay and status; a problem we sadly still haven’t solved.

Overall people must feel that life in the industrial revolution was unbearable for those who endured it but this was the sad reality they faced.  However, the relief provided by some games must have brought some comfort – although we at Campion Chronicle would definitely prefer to live in modern times!

Year 12 Students Motivated By UCAS Exhibition NEC 2019

26th June 2019Mrs D Curtis

It may have been wet and cold day but that didn’t stop our brilliant year 12 representing the academy at the UCAS Exhibition this week.

There was something for everyone for our budding Sixth Form, ranging from Actuarial Sciences to Aerospace Engineering.

Silvia said, “Today has motivated me to work harder”. The students experienced a 360 degree movie about life on campus, talks on personal statements, apprenticeship opportunities, bursaries, scholarships and much more.

Year 12 students left the exhibition loaded with pens, prospectuses and with more clarity around the five university selections they will be making next term.

GSUS Live Experience A Great Success

7th May 2019Mrs D Curtis

On Monday 29th April the GSUS Bus Live, a purpose-built classroom equipped with touch screen tablet computers, was on site all week to deliver Religious Education (RE).

The GSUS Bus Live enabled students in year 7-10 and year 12 to experience an interactive RE lesson.  Students were able to look at three different topics Fear, Rejection and Forgiveness through the eyes of teenagers today and situations we may face in our everyday lives.

All students thoroughly enjoyed their experience on the GSUS Bus and have said that they would recommend other schools to make the most of this resource in school.

Students’ Visit Oxford And Cambridge Universities

7th May 2019Mrs D Curtis

A number of Year 10 students’ have recently visited Oxford University and Cambridge University.

On the 27th February and the 30th April respectively students spent the day looking at the building, learning about what is required to attend such a university and the courses on offer.

Both days were very informative and students’ found out a lot and it increased their knowledge about what is on offer in higher education and the benefits of getting such a qualification.

They represented the academy very well and were accompanied by Mr White on both trips, with Mrs Lowe going to Oxford and Miss Eddowes joining the group at Cambridge.

Lenten Liturgy

29th April 2019Mrs D Ferris

On the last day of the Lenten term St Edmund’s came together as a whole community to listen, watch and participate in our Lenten liturgy before we departed for our Easter Break.
The liturgy was based on the Stations of the Cross. The stations were performed with compassion and dignity by a group of students from all year groups . After each station we reflected on contemporary struggles recalling the struggles Jesus faced as he walked to Calvery. A candle was lit and we prayed together.
Accompanying our performers were St Edmund’s Academy choir, performing songs from ‘Born For This’ with an amazing solo from Abigail Caligong.
The message of Easter and the Resurrection was established today – the Lord died and Rose for us to take away our sins and set us free.

Synod Catch Up

29th April 2019Mrs D Ferris

Pope Francis to the youth of today: ‘You matter and you are important’
In the last week of term, the Kenelm trust, Soli House team and visitors from America and Canada came to St Edmund’s to speak to students involved in Pope Francis’ Synod on youth. Last year our students had discussed what challenges and issues they face in today’s modern world as a child of faith. On this visit the team shared the Pope’s response to their questions and concerns in a new document ‘Christus Vivit’
The Pope highlighted the challenges that young people face offering this as a “letter from the father to his kids’. Pope Francis reminds us: ‘you matter and you are important, and the church think you are important’.
The students received feedback on the Pope’s message and the session finished with prayers and music.

Year 8 Careers Day Success

19th March 2019Mrs D Curtis

On Thursday 14 March St Edmund’s Catholic Academy held the first ever Year 8 Careers Day. The Kristian Thomas Sports Arena was host to more than 25 professionals who kindly agreed to hold a stall, displaying tools for their profession, and engage in conversation with students sharing their career experiences.

Students had the opportunity to ask the stall holders many questions and seek advice on subjects they may need to choose for their options in year 9.  Students then recorded the information in their books to note their aspirations for their future.

Special thanks to everyone who gave their time so generously to make the event a huge success.
