ECO Week Success

14th July 2023Mrs D Curtis

St Edmund’s Catholic Academy is committed to become a LiveSimply award community in response to Pope Francis’ call in Laudato Si to protect the world entrusted to us by God. By embracing sustainability, the academy is taking an active role in creating a better future for the environment.

The ECO Week sustainability events for Year 7, 8, and 9 students that took place earlier this week demonstrate the dedication to raising awareness and promoting sustainable practices among its students. The various activities and competitions, such as the video-making competition, movie night, science club, and raffle, provide engaging opportunities for students to learn about environmental issues and solutions.

The decision to donate the profits made during ECO Week to environmental charities or to fund the school’s own sustainability initiatives is commendable. It not only supports important causes but also reinforces the school’s commitment to taking concrete action toward sustainability.

By fostering collaboration between students, staff and stakeholders, St Edmund’s is building a community that prioritises sustainable choices and decisions. This collective effort ensures that sustainability becomes an integral part of the academy’s agenda and empowers students to make a positive impact on the environment.

Overall, St Edmund’s Catholic Academy’s initiatives and activities during ECO Week reflect their dedication to environmental stewardship and their commitment to creating a sustainable future. By engaging students and promoting sustainability, the academy is instilling important values and fostering a sense of responsibility towards the planet.

Lower School Celebrations

13th July 2023Mrs D Curtis

It’s fantastic to hear about the celebration of efforts and achievements in the Lower School! The awards given to students in Years 7 and 8, such as tutor nominee, highest grades, most progress, highest ATL, most merits, and most Star Awards, showcase the diverse talents and hard work of the students.

Mr. Selvey, the Head of Lower School, expressed his pride in the many winners and emphasised that they should feel proud of themselves. This recognition event is a wonderful way to acknowledge the students’ dedication and accomplishments throughout the year.

Jaya Rani, specifically mentioned by Mrs. Jeer, the Head of Year 7, stands out as an exceptional student who embodies and upholds the school’s CARE values. Jaya’s positive influence on her peers and her overall conduct makes her a credit to her tutor group, year group, and the school as a whole. It’s evident that she is a role model for others.

Similarly, Oliver Green, recognised by Mr. Taylor, the Head of Year 8, is commended for his confidence, intelligence, and good manners. Oliver consistently demonstrates the CARE values and serves as a role model for his peers in the Lower School. His hard work and exemplary behaviour are recognised and appreciated.

Overall, this celebration event and the individual recognition of students like Jaya Rani and Oliver Green highlight the positive atmosphere and the focus on character development in the Lower School. It’s clear that the students are encouraged to embody the school’s values and are supported in their journey toward future success.

Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust Assembly

13th July 2023Mrs D Curtis
Yesterday, Danielle, an Apprenticeship Promotion & Information Officer from RWT Apprenticeships, conducted a presentation for year 12 students. The focus was on showcasing the diverse range of career prospects within the medical field, including aspiring doctors, cardiologists, and therapists in AHP roles. In addition to highlighting the success of year 13 students in securing degree apprenticeships in the corporate sector, the presentation also delved into the possibilities offered by the public sector.

Danielle provided valuable insights into the numerous career opportunities within the NHS, emphasising the various levels of apprenticeships and providing details on salaries. Real-life case studies were shared, featuring individuals pursuing careers ranging from project managers to doctors.

One of the attendees, Sana, a year 12 student, said, “This was really useful, I would definitely explore this more”.

The students were given the chance to ask questions and explore opportunities aligned with their specific career aspirations.

Overall, Danielle’s presentation seems to have made a positive impact by providing valuable information and inspiring students to consider apprenticeships in the public sector, particularly within the NHS.

Was this response better or worse?

Dodgeball Success

6th July 2023Mrs D Curtis

Congratulations to the boys and girls year 7/8 Dodgeball teams from St Edmund’s Catholic Academy for qualifying for the Black Country School Games! It’s a testament to their skill and hard work.

On the 29th of June, twenty St Edmund’s pupils travelled to the University of Wolverhampton, Walsall campus, where they competed against other qualified teams. The competition showcased an exceptionally high standard, but the St Edmund’s pupils rose to the challenge.

The boys’ team should be proud to have secured the bronze medal, showcasing their talent and dedication to the sport. Similarly, the girls’ team demonstrated their skill and determination, finishing in 4th place after narrowly missing out in the 3rd place play-off.

It’s fantastic to hear that both teams participated with great enthusiasm, perseverance, and sportsmanship. These qualities are invaluable in both sports and life.

Congratulations once again to the boys and girls year 7/8 Dodgeball teams, as well as their coaches and supporters, for their achievements in the Black Country School Games. Well done on representing St Edmund’s Catholic Academy with pride!

Memorial of Saint Maria Goretti

6th July 2023Mrs D Curtis
Saint Maria Goretti, a young and courageous martyr, is an exemplar of purity, forgiveness, and holiness. Born in Italy in 1890, she faced great challenges at a young age. When confronted by a violent attacker who sought to violate her chastity, Maria chose to protect her purity and defended her virtue, even at the cost of her life. Despite the severity of her wounds, Maria displayed remarkable forgiveness and love by forgiving her assailant and praying for his conversion. Her unwavering faith, virtuous example, and martyrdom have inspired countless individuals worldwide. Saint Maria Goretti is revered as the patroness of purity, youth, and forgiveness, reminding us of the transformative power of love and the importance of upholding the sanctity of human life.
Saint Maria Goretti – Pray for us
Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness, no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many. – Hebrews 12:14-15

Catholic Clock Competition Winners

5th July 2023Mrs D Curtis
Design and Technology Department –  Catholic Clock Design Competition.

Over the last few weeks, Mr. Deeming has been running a competition for years 7 and 8 to produce a clock design based on one of two catholic events; the Epiphany and St Francis’ Feast.  Students had to choose one of these events and design a clock face using associated imagery and symbols. They were given a selection of materials and processes they could use to make their design a reality and were also given limits on shape and size.

There were over a hundred entries and the standard of work was exceptional which made picking winners very difficult.

After careful consultation with all ADT staff, the winning entries are in Year 7- Imogen Allmark and in Year 8- Lyla Trubshaw.

Runners-up are Natalia Jefimiuk, Roxana Zielonka, Princess Konadu Banna, Amelie Chew, and CH.

The two winning designs have been made into physical products and will go on display in the ADT department.

Well done to all those students who entered.

Memorial of the First Martyrs

30th June 2023Mrs D Curtis
The First Martyrs of the Church of Rome were Christians martyred in the city of Rome during Nero’s persecution. The event is recorded by both Tacitus and Pope Clement I, among others. In July of 64CE, Rome was devastated by fire. Largely made up of wooden tenements, a fire was a frequent occurrence in the city. Rumour blamed the tragedy on the unpopular emperor Nero, who wanted to enlarge his palace. He accused the Christians. According to the historian Tacitus, many Christians were put to death “not so much of the crime of firing the city, as of hatred against mankind”. This feast commemorates those unknown and unnamed men and women who were cruelly tortured and executed. For every person the Romans killed, at least two would be converted. This is why Christianity was able to rise so steadily during the first four centuries of the common era.
We pray in solidarity for all those who have gone before us as witnesses of Jesus Christ. May they rest in peace. Amen.
If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name. – 1 Peter 4:14-16

Premier League Inspires Programme

28th June 2023Mrs D Curtis

Congratulations to the students from St Edmund’s Catholic Academy for their successful presentation and video at Aston Villa Football Club as part of the Premier League Inspires programme. It’s fantastic to hear that they have designed a recyclable limited-edition shirt using plastic bottles and cups collected at the Molineux Stadium, with the hope that the Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club Team will wear it during their warm-up on match days in the 2023/24 season.

It’s wonderful to see that Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club is interested in the idea and supports sustainability, aligning with the “One Pack One Planet” initiative. The team must be excitedly awaiting the results of the votes from yesterday’s event and are looking forward to presenting to the panel at the national event hosted by West Ham United.

A special congratulations to the team members for their remarkable achievements. They should be proud of their hard work and dedication. It’s great to see their efforts supported by Mr. Banks and Ms. Kelly. Well done to:

– Abigail Evans
– Gavan Bajra
– Jenson Evans
– Jamie Wharton
– Harley Middleton
– Charlie Bennett

Keep up the fantastic work and best of luck in the upcoming events!
