Cafod-Family Fast Day Friday 5th October

3rd October 2018Mrs D Ferris

Sadly, due to poverty and injustice, this harvest will not be bright for millions of children and young people around the world who will miss out on food, clean water and even on going to school.
But your support is helping to change this! Last year, schools around England and Wales joined us to
Brighten Up and help make the world a brighter place for communities living in extreme poverty. Your fundraising has been enabling CAFOD partners to work alongside the poorest communities as they find ways to overcome their many challenges. Thank you!
St Edmund’s will ‘ Brighten Up’ on the Annual Fast Day this Friday 5 October. We will be continuing to collect loose change in our ‘Cafod Pyramid Boxes’, and on Friday we are asking students and staff to either donate the amount of something they normally treat themselves to like a chocolate bar, doughnut etc or to give up their normal lunch instead choose Leek and Potato soup with a roll for £1 cash in the canteen, which will be served by the Lay Chaplain and staff. All the money will be donated to Cafod. A special thanks go’s to our catering staff for making the soup provided.
During this week, some of our students have had assemblies, highlighting the work Cafod does and our prayer theme for the school for this week is Cafod.
The good news is that the number of hungry people in our world is falling, but with 793 million of our sisters and brothers still undernourished, we cannot give up.*
We can all be part of helping to eradicate global poverty and building a brighter world. Whatever you do to Brighten Up, thank you.
Make a difference!
£1 buys seeds for a family to grow beans
£7 buys a treated mosquito net that keeps children safe from malaria
£33 supplies one family with safe, clean water in their home
£300 buys a mobile health team for remote communities that don’t have hospitals

Wear it Purple Day and Cake Sale

8th June 2018Mrs D Ferris

On Friday 25th May 2018, the staff turned the school purple by wearing purple clothes to raise funds for Pancreatic Cancer. ‘Wear it Purple’ day is normally in November but St Edmund’s Catholic Academy decided to have theirs near to the anniversary of the passing of their beloved colleague Mandy Whittaker who sadly died of Pancreatic Cancer a year ago.

The staff also purchased lapel pins and pens and the students held a cake sale during break and lunchtimes. Sam Hamilton one of our catering staff made many cakes with purple icing on and other members of staff donated cakes.

Thank you to all involved including the new appointed six form Chaplaincy team, who gave up their time or donated in any way. We raised £101.25 from the sale of the lapel pins and £98.75 from the sale of the cakes and from donations.

Collection for Haven

21st December 2017Mrs D Ferris

Christmas Charity Collection
St. Edmund’s staff recently raised £81.70 in a collection for the Haven Women’s Refuge. The Haven Wolverhampton, one of the largest refuge providers in the UK, supports women and dependent children who are at risk of domestic violence, homelessness and abuse. It provides emotional and practical support to some of the most vulnerable members of our local community.
An important aspect of our work at St. Edmund’s is to teach our pupils to reach out and contribute to the wider community, especially those in need. As a staff, it is essential that we also actively demonstrate this ethos.
Through using In Kind Direct, we were able to donate six hampers which contained essential toiletries, a few “luxury” items and some sweet treats to The Haven. We hope that this small gesture will help to brighten the day for those seeking refuge this Christmas.

Macmillan Cake Sale

2nd October 2017Mrs D Ferris

The 6 form Chaplaincy Group help a great cake sale today in aid of Macmillan Coffee Morning. Students and staff brought in cakes and biscuit galore, many were home made by parents, pupils and staff. We had so many donations that the sale had to be held over both lunch times and break time.

We also had a huge chocolate cake, and for 50p you could guess the weight of the cake. The winner was Mrs Devi from the Technology Department, who guessed 3pound 5 ounces and the weight was 3 pound 10.

The six formers and staff worked very hard and successfully raise £143.67 well done to everyone who contributed in anyway. I am sure the money will contribute to the hard work the Macmillan Charity do in caring for people with cancer. Bless you.

Macmillan Cake Sale

27th September 2017Mrs D Ferris

On Friday our 6 form and Chaplaincy Team will be holding a Macmillan Cake Sale. This Charity is close to many people’s hearts and we are kindly asking students and staff to bring in any cakes for sale. Also, parents could you please send you child into school with some extra money, 50p if possible.
There will also be an opportunity to guess the weight of the cake, this will be 50p a go, the winner gets a cake for Friday night tea!
There are now 2.5 million people in the UK living with cancer. By 2030, it will be 4 million people, and we want to be there for them all.
One in three of us will get cancer, and it will be one of the toughest things we’ll ever have to face. Our goal is to make sure no one faces cancer alone.
We provide medical, emotional, practical and financial support, as well as campaigning for better cancer care. And because cancer affects more than just those facing it, we’re there for friends and family too. We are Macmillan.

Thank you in advance for your support and generosity

Euro 2016 – Students hold a charity cake sale

16th June 2016S Huynh

In support of the Euro 2016 and to celebrate the Queen’s 90th Birthday, students at St Edmund’s Catholic Academy have been selling ‘football’ and ‘birthday’ cupcakes in aid of raising money for charity.

Quxah in Year 12 said: “As a Sixth Form we decided to do a fundraiser where we did a cake sale.

Half of the cupcakes were a celebration of the Queen’s 90th and the other half were for the Euros. It was great to see students getting excited for the game as well as remembering the Queen’s Birthday. This was for a good cause and all money raised will go to The Haven charity In Wolverhampton.”

Pupils and students are all getting into the football spirit here at St Edmund’s this afternoon by watching the match on the big screens!

Come on England!

Students Swap their Beds for Cardboard Boxes

By S Huynh17th March 2016

A number of enthusiastic Wolverhampton students braved the cold weather and took part in the ‘Sleep Easy’ campaign last Friday night, to raise money in changing the lives of young homeless people in the Black Country.

Sleep Easy is a national event which sees hundreds of people from up and down the country giving up their TOG rated duvets to help change the lives of homeless young people in their communities. Sixth Form students at St Edmund’s Catholic Academy in Wolverhampton prepared themselves to spend their Friday night sleeping in a cardboard box.

Every night, YMCA Black Country Group provides support and shelter for over 300 homeless young people across the Black Country and Staffordshire border area in addition to family mediation, substance misuse support and other services in order to prevent homelessness occurring in the first place.

St Edmund’s Catholic Academy are hoping to raise around £200 for the Moving Forward Fund which enables these young people to move on in their lives, by providing not only the practical things that make a house a home but also accessing employment and training opportunities, as well as providing them with much needed emotional support.

The campaign took place at St Edmund’s Catholic Academy, on Friday 11th March from 6pm – 6am, with a soup kitchen provided by the YMCA and an inspirational speech from  ‘Chedene’, who was previously homeless but had her life turned around with the help of the charity.

St Edmund’s would like to say a very big thank you to all the students who took part in such a worthy cause, Wolf Mountain for entertaining our students for part of the night and most importantly to Mr Bentley, Mrs Wrenshall-Jones and Mr Auger, for giving up their well-earned, comfortable Friday night to accompany the students. This type of event just couldn’t go ahead without the good will and support of our fantastic staff.
