Our Year 12 students recently completed an unforgettable Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award practice canoe expedition, demonstrating resilience, teamwork and determination throughout an action-packed four days.

The expedition began with a day of essential preparation, during which students deepened their knowledge of expedition equipment, route planning, emergency procedures, and first aid, ensuring they were well-equipped for the challenges ahead.

Day two saw the group launch onto the River Severn from Bridgnorth. Working in pairs, they honed their canoeing skills before paddling downstream to Highley. After a rewarding day on the water, students pitched their tents, cooked an evening meal, and spent the night under canvas.

On day three, the expedition continued to Stourport. With growing confidence and experience, students worked brilliantly together, demonstrating just how much they had developed over the course of the journey.

The final day brought a series of simulated emergency scenarios, testing students’ problem-solving skills, resilience, and ability to remain calm under pressure. Every participant rose to the challenge, impressing the expedition staff before preparing for next year’s assessed Gold expedition.

We are incredibly proud of all our students for embracing the experience with enthusiasm, perseverance, and a willingness to step outside their comfort zones. We wish them every success as they prepare for their assessed Gold expedition next year.

A huge thank you to Mrs Beech and Mrs Hobday for their invaluable support and commitment, helping to make another successful Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expedition possible for our St Edmund’s students.
