Our A level chemistry students had a fascinating day taking part in a practical activity in the fantastic modern facilities of the Collaborative Teaching Laboratory at the University of Birmingham. They investigated the use of biopolymers from seaweed in the prevention of cancers, applying A level chemistry concepts to current research that is underway at the University. They enjoyed a tour of the lab and discussion with postdoctoral students to find out more about where their science qualifications can take them.
Students then had the incredible experience to listen to a lecture by a recent Nobel Prize winner (Nobel Prize for medicine and physiology 2025) – Professor Shimon Sakaguchi – who was visiting from University of Osaka, Japan. This was an unforgettable opportunity to gain an insight into the highest level of academic scientific research and learn about Professor Sakaguchi’s groundbreaking work in immunology.
