Goodbye Work Experience

17th December 2019Mrs D Curtis

The Year 11 work experience window has now sadly come to a close. This week Year 11 has been fortunate enough to have experienced working life either through a work placement outside of school or with staff members within school.

Why do we do work experience?

Under the statutory guidance for schools, the government requires schools to offer unbiased careers advice and guidance, meaning schools must allow students to explore different avenues whether it be college, sixth form or apprenticeship. Our school will always support students and encourage them to use skills to reach out to places because they “want young people to be informed and to make good choices for their future career paths.”

What is the purpose of work experience?

Work experience help’s students gain an insight into the world of work and develop as young people. Most students who have been out of school have either realised that they want a career in that profession or want to do something completely different – which is the point of work experience. It allows teenagers to step out into the adult world and sort out their own life, they are given the chance to be independent by having to worry about timings, transportation, food etc. Mrs Gibbons, Assistant Principal, hopes that the students feel inspired, and that parents recognise the benefits of this week and possibly feel inspired to pursue their interest too because “there’s never an age when you should stop learning”.

When Mrs Gibbons was in Year 11 she did work experience in a primary school, where she realised she loved the environment of a school. However later on she realised that she didn’t want to work with young children because she couldn’t apply her law degree, so she decided that secondary school was the way to go. She found it interesting going back to her old primary school, because for her it was “interesting to see teachers in a new light and to see how hard they work”. At the age of 17, she did two weeks work experience, one week in a solicitors’ office where she got to go to a magistrate court and do solicitor duties in the office. The other week was spent at the custody office at a prison where she got to read interesting files, however, she couldn’t meet young offenders due to confidentiality but she did get to calculate sentences for the new arrivals. There were a few memorable moments including when the prison went on lockdown, and visitors were being restrained, one that she remembers vividly was when her food was served by adult long term offenders (who were serving time for murders and other crimes). She learnt about how prisons allow prisoners to show responsibility and self-reform by working so that if they do get released they have experience that could allow them to ease back into society.

Work experience was arranged by Miss Dell and Mrs Gibbons, who aided and supported students in finding a work placement, and worked tirelessly to create a collapsed timetable that enabled students who hadn’t found a placement to: hear about a broad range of careers; learn/develop skills that would benefit them in the working environment; participate in business related challenges; find a focus for their summer exams. Students found this week “helpful” as it gave them “better understanding of future career paths”. They also appreciated a change of focus after doing mocks because it provided them with “a sense of accomplishment” and gave them “motivation for GCSE” because they now know what is needed for their careers paths.

It’s fair to say that it was an enjoyably memorable experience that has helped shaped the lives of many students, especially having spoken to guest speakers which included: a hairdresser, a paralegal, a nurse, a police officer,  a strengthening families worker, a West Midlands fire service firefighter, a pilot, and teachers (who were Mrs Gibbons and Mrs Hazeldine – interesting enough they both had very different journeys and showed how there are so many paths to becoming a teacher, every teacher’s journey is different. I challenge you to ask different teachers how they got into teaching and what their journey was like – their answers might just surprise you). All the talks were amazing and helped cement career decisions for some students and others gained more of an idea about what they want to do with their lives. Students found it inspirational to see people from the same communities as them go on to lead fulfilling lives. The speakers demonstrated that no matter your background as long as you have a passion you will succeed. Every speaker expressed how there are many different routes you can take to get to where you want to in life!

Ofsted Inspection Tuesday 26th and Wednesday 27th November 2019

25th November 2019Mrs D Curtis

I am writing to inform you that St Edmund’s Catholic Academy is being visited by Ofsted Inspectors on Tuesday 26th and Wednesday 27th November 2019.

A team of 2 inspectors will be on site during the 2 days and this is an opportunity to demonstrate the work of the school to date, progress over recent years and share our plans for the future.

You are invited to complete an Ofsted Questionnaire on ‘Parent View’ on the Ofsted website at https://parentview.ofsted.gov.uk/login?destination=give-your-views

Please complete the online survey by 11am on 26 November 2019 as this will give the inspection team more time to consider your views.  However, the inspectors  will consider all online responses that are completed during the inspection, although the free-text box facility will not be available after noon on 27 November 2019.

Thank you for your support to date and I will share the outcome of the Inspection once we have received the official report.

            Tanki Online

18th November 2019Miss A Kane

Tanki Online is massive multiplayer video game that involves you becoming a tank and challenging/fighting other people’s tanks across the globe. You can customize your tank by going to the shop and paying for upgrades with the crystals which you earn from battles. There are different types of battle modes you can choose such as: deathmatch, team deathmatch, capture the flag, control points, assault, rugby, solo juggernaut and finally team juggernaut. For some of these battle modes you will need to have a high rank (so your level needs to be higher).  If you haven’t got a high score,  you can just do a classic deathmatch until you have achieved a high enough level.

The Shop:

In the shop not only can you customize your tank but also upgrade it so it becomes stronger. This can give you an advantage in the game so if you were to upgrade your defense and attack the other players in your game would find it much harder to take you down. But for me it would be very easy. You can also buy something called turrets.  These are the things that are on top of your tank and shoot different types of weapons.  Examples of this are lava, ice or even fir.e These can also be upgraded.

Maps:

Finally, when you would like to go into battle there is a voting area on which map you would like to fight on.   You have three choices; the one with the most votes is the one you will be battling on.

I hope you give this game a try.

Year 8 Eating Out in French Style

4th November 2019Miss A Kane

On Friday 11th October twenty Year 8 students went to Olive Grove Pub in Hednesford and had a French restaurant experience ran by JLH Languages. Students spoke only in French for the duration of the three course meal and had to order all of their food and drink in French. Students also had puzzles to solve and games to play whilst there.

Everyone ordered and ate a three course meal, set at a traditional dining table. Some of the food included soup as starter, roast chicken or vegetable lasagne for the main course and a warm french crepe or creme caramel as dessert.

All students had a wonderful time and enjoyed practising their French in a real life situation. Marcel Tombura said “I enjoyed the trip, it was a very exciting opportunity. Overall it was fun, educational and tasty.”

Black History Month at St Edmund’s.

30th October 2019Miss A Kane

We were visited by Gazebo Theatre Company who delivered a workshop to our Year 11s to explore Black History Month. The focus of the dramatisation was focused on the Windrush Generation, their arrival in Britain through invitation by the British Government, their experiences of their new life in England compared to what they had been taught and the hardships and racism they faced in trying to find work, housing and opportunities.

Pupils spoke about racism in Britain in the 20th century and defining migration and immigration. Both actors spoke about their own experiences of being Black and British and the stories of their own successes and their families. Student’s were left with much more clear knowledge on migration to Britain in the 20th century and the positive impact on the Britain we live in today.

University Visit for Design and Technology Students.

14th October 2019Miss A Kane

Friday 13th of September was an enjoyable day for Design and Technology students, who met a visitor who came to  to St Edmund’s to discuss University.

The previous Student of St Edmund’s, Christina Montana,  gave an interesting speech about her work in University studying Architecture.  Her influential speech clearly showed students a range of ways to improve and also what to expect if preparing to take D&T for University. The unique but effective discussion clearly conveyed to students the importance of D&T and aspiring to achieve the highest grade. She also explained the different skills and techniques needed to impress universities that require portfolios.

Pictured are year 12’s: Zeeshan Iqbal, Akash Patel, Sam Emms, Emma Esedebe, and Hubert Wieczorek. All discussing the importance of working hard and thinking innovatively, and also getting an important lesson in how to improve their portfolios in their A-Level studies.

Speaking Out

9th October 2019Miss A Kane

Recently, a 13-year-old girl went to a meeting about plans to build approximately 1,300 houses on green belt land in the Black Country. But who is this 13-year-old girl and why is she important? Kate Davies is this girl. She is a year 9 at St Edmunds.

At this meeting she managed to convey her concerns to a room filled with adults. She said “In school, I’m on the eco committee and we’re trying to improve our school as the world is getting destroyed”

She also wrote to her local MP to express her concerns regarding the new development.

Sporting Success

9th October 2019Miss A Kane
There has been great sporting success over the last few days. On Friday 4th October the Y7 football team beat Wombourne High School 5-2. This was their first league game and was a great way to start the season. Then on Tuesday 8th October they beat Heath Park 6-1 with another convincing performance. The Y7 players are;
Dylan Coe
Josh Welford
Josh Ife
Rocky Tighe
Mason Taylor
Luis Aneke
Roman Duggan
Harry Lynch
Bobby Hughes
Alfie Moss
George Cooke
Harry Craze
David Osifo
Dylan Ridley
Also, on Monday 7th October the Y9 football team beat WGS in their first league game of the season. This followed a disappointing result in the cup the Monday before, where sadly they lost to Moseley Park 4-3. So to get back to winning ways was fantastic.  The following students represented the academy very well;
Phallen Wakeley
Raymond Aneke
Harold Wilcox
Jack Jepson
Mario Mihaila
Suleman Khan
Leo Bayley
Herbie Mandare Singh
Lamic Haile
Christian Ohiaer
Karanveer Manku
Niall Cullen-Barratt.
Well done and keep up the good work!!!
