Today we celebrate the Feast Day of Saint Mark the Evangelist

25th April 2023Mrs D Curtis
Saint Mark brought to us the Gospel of Mark. On this day of celebration, let us read this gospel in prayerful thought. Through reflection on the gospel we can relate our lives to the words of the Bible. The words of Mark were written hundreds of years ago but the spiritual meaning in them is something we can still feel to this day.
The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God, as it is written in Isaiah the prophet: “I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way”
“a voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.'” – Mark 1:1-3

Solemnity of Saint George

24th April 2023Mrs D Curtis
Saint George relied on his faith in God to provide him with strength during his trials. When we put our faith in God he can provide us the strength to overcome our struggles as well as to help others through theirs. As protector of the persecuted, Saint George should inspire us to fight for those who need support. Actions and words to support the rights of all people help to make the world a more accepting and tolerant place. We can achieve this with the strength of God.
He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. – Isaiah 40:29

Today is the celebration of Eid al-Fitr

21st April 2023Mrs D Curtis
Today is the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, a significant day for Muslims all around the world. We can take this day to learn about Islamic culture and beliefs, to be active in our understanding of others. Understanding others’ faith can strengthen our own. Love and respect for people allows us to love God deeper and be steadfast in our faith. This is a day of prayer and celebration, let us also spend this day in celebratory prayer together.
And whosoever puts his trust in Allah, then He will suffice him – al-Talaaq 65:3
I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one. – John 10:28-30

Aya Reaches Mayor’s Poetry Competition Final

21st April 2023Mrs D Curtis
Year 12 student, Aya Ali, entered her creative poetry to the Wolverhampton Mayor’s competition to celebrate the King’s Coronation and is now in the final.
Aya helps to run the Eco Club where students have been writing poetry about the environment. She was delighted to hear that her amazing work has reached the final and is now one of 5 finalists in the 16+ category.
This is a great achievement as the organisers say that the quality of writing created across the City was fantastic.

All finalists will be published in the commemorative book and each finalist will receive a free copy.
The final judging panel will meet to decide the overall winners and runners up in each category early next week. Winners will be invited to afternoon tea with the Mayor.
Well done and good luck Aya, we are very proud of you!

Army Motivational Talk

18th April 2023Mrs D Curtis

Warrant Officer A. Hopkins from Venning Barracks Donnington delivered a motivational talk to Year 12 students recently. He touched upon many topics including democracy, the Falkland Islands, Bosnia and Iraq. He spoke about how the army supports countries when natural disasters occur, such as the floods in the Lake District and, more recently, how the army provided support after the earthquake in Turkey. He also explained how the army helps other countries to prevent conflicts.

One of our students explained to the Officer about our academy’s CARE values and he related these to the values and standards in the army. He talked about self discipline and how small changes can improve our lives. He then discussed examples of integrity and selfless commitment.

The Officer talked about degree courses, army careers, his experience as a soldier in Iraq and Bosnia and life in general, including the story of why he joined the army and how finding a job that you enjoy doing will change your life.

Ahead Partnership Talk

18th April 2023Mrs D Curtis

Our sixth formers had a fabulous morning recently when a representative from Capsticks, market leaders in public sector law, came to give a ‘careers insight’ talk.

Claire Roche, the nominated speaker who was our guest for the morning, allowed the students to understand more about her own career path, giving the students an idea about where their dreams and aspirations could eventually lead.

Not only did this mean that the students were able to learn about different careers in the field of law, but they were also able to ask questions if they were particularly interested in something that was said or something that they believed may be able to help them in the future.

Many thanks to Ahead Partnership for supporting the school with this event.

U15’s Indoor Cricket Success

18th April 2023Mrs D Curtis

The U15’s girls indoor cricket team represented St Edmund’s in the Staffordshire Cricket Tournament recently at Aldersley Leisure Village.

The girls progressed really well and their last league game against OLSC was tense! Some great batting at the very end gave us a win 95 runs to 94. This placed the team into joint 3rd place in the pool so narrowly missing out on the semi finals.

Well done to all players Autumn, Ellie, Megan, Karyce, Victory, Remaiya, Emily, Gabriella and Sharnell. You really improved your skills and understanding.
