World Cancer Day is an international day to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection and treatment. This day is led by the Union for International Cancer Control to support the goals of the World Cancer Declaration.
Rosa Parks Day is a holiday in honour of the civil rights leader Rosa Parks. Though she was a seamstress by profession, she also worked as a secretary for the Montgomery chapter of the NAACP. As a member of this group she was sent to Abbeville, Alabama to investigate the case of Recy Taylor. These events lay the groundwork for the Montgomery Bus Boycott and her later refusal to move from her seat.
The International Day of Human Fraternity was established by the United Nations General Assembly to promote greater cultural and religious tolerance. The vision behind this day links with that of the Academy’s CARE values as we should be respectful of others, no matter their cultural heritage or religion.
Wear Red Day is celebrated to bring greater attention to heart disease. The Children’s Heart Surgery Fund raise money for the Leeds Congenital Heart Unit, a facility that provides care for children with congenital heart disease.
