In 258 CE, during the persecution of Christians under Emperor Valerian, Pope Sixtus II and several deacons were martyred. Lawrence, who was responsible for the Church’s material wealth, was ordered by the prefect of Rome to hand over the treasures of the Church. In a courageous act of faith, Lawrence presented the poor, the crippled, and the suffering as the true treasures of the Church. For this act of defiance and his unwavering faith, Lawrence was sentenced to a brutal death by being roasted on a gridiron.
