Christmas Concert

14th December 2016Mrs D Curtis

On 7th December we saw the return of the St. Edmund’s Christmas Concert where a host of talented students from different clubs and groups got together to kick off the festive season with a bang! Orchestra set the bar for the evening with their wonderful medley of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and the Suite from the Polar Express. The audience then got their first chance to join in by singing along to The First Noel before the Folk Band played a rousing set of Celtic tunes with the audience clapping along. The newly formed Rock Band then took to the stage with two fantastic numbers;7 Years and Mercy.  Y7 pupil Nicole Fajimeye was cool and confident in her role as lead singer and the band was extremely professional. The audience got back in the festive spirit with the Woodwind Ensemble’s rendition of Wonderful Christmas Time before solo performance from Christina Clifton and Sinead Cullen-Barratt -one of our ‘Killer Queens’ from our upcoming production of We Will Rock You with S. Peter’s. Finally the St. Edmund’s Choir took to the stage with a range of festive pieces; John Rutter’s Angel’s Carol, an alternative arrangement of Away in a Manger and the groovy Calypso Carol. The evening ended with all the performers joining in with the audience for We Wish You a Merry Christmas. The evening was wonderfully festive and a fantastic opportunity for our musical talent to showcase what they’ve been working on this term. Miss Baskeyfield and Mrs Roberts want to say a huge thank you to all the staff, parents and students for making the Christmas Concert possible. St Edmund’s will soon be starting preparations for their summer tour to Belgium!

Isobel and Sam are Bake Off Winners

9th December 2016Mrs D Curtis

Congratulations to Sam Munger and Isobel Rafferty who came 5th and 6th place in the Bake Off Final at Highfields School this year.

Judging was based not just on overall appearance but on the quality of the actual Victoria Sandwich cake produced. You can see images of our star bakers engrossed in creating their designs and taking part in a cupcake decorating workshop, which was organised whilst cakes were cooling prior to decoration.

Mrs Bates, Food Technology Teacher, said “It was a very enjoyable event and I look forward to entering our students again next year”.

St Edmund’s Day Mass Celebrations

2nd December 2016Mrs D Curtis

Our annual St Edmund’s Day Mass took place on Wednesday 30 November.  Students, staff, guests and other members of our academy community celebrated our patronal feast day.  Monsignor Mark Crisp, Father Paul Whieldon, Father Pawel Bielak and Father Simon Baker, visiting from Birmingham, also concelebrated. At the end of the Mass Monsignor Mark was presented with a gift to mark his Silver Jubilee – 25 years since his ordination into the priesthood.  A celebratory event had been held previously for him at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Primary and Nursery, one of the four primaries forming part of Bishop Cleary Catholic Multi Academy Company, with St Edmund’s.

Guests assembled after the Mass in the Peace Garden where, to mark the end of the Year of Mercy, a large tiled plaque depicting the face of Jesus Christ was unveiled and blessed by Father Mark.  This plaque, made up of many small tiles, was designed and constructed by Year 10 students from the Technology Department under the supervision of their teacher, Miss Mifflin.

Blessed Edmund Campion (1540-1581) was an English Roman Catholic Jesuit priest and martyr, canonised in 1970 by Pope Paul V1 as one of the Forty Martyrs of England.

Silver Jubilee Celebrations for Monsignor Mark Crisp

25th November 2016Mrs D Curtis

On Wednesday 23 November students and staff from St Edmund’s Catholic Academy, SS Peters and Paul Catholic Primary Academy and Nursery, parishioners from SS Peters and Paul, St Michael’s and St Bernadette’s, together with friends and family of our beloved Chaplain Monsignor Mark Crisp, attended a Mass of Thanksgiving on the occasion of the Silver Jubilee of the Ordination to the Priesthood of Monsignor Mark.  This was held at St Michael’s Catholic Church, Wolverhampton.

It truly was a joyful Mass with singing lead by St Edmund’s choir, cantor’s from Wilf Jones and a beautiful piece sung by an African choir.  Students from St Edmund’s were altar serving and Mrs Ferris, Lay Chaplain was asked to read the first reading.

In Monsignor Mark’s homily he recapped on different events in his life and how St Francis and St Ignatius has helped and had an effect on his life.

After the Final Hymn ‘Tell out My Soul, which was played 25 years ago at Monsignor Mark’s ordination, everyone was invited to a celebratory buffet and a drink to celebrate.  Many old friends were reunited and new friends were made.
