Family Engineering Days for Year 7, 8 & 9 Students

25th January 2018Mrs D Curtis

At The Smallpeice Trust, they believe anything is possible when you know how. That’s why they’re here to give young people everything they need to fuel their passion for engineering, helping to make their big ideas a reality.

The Smallpeice Trust is running a series of Family Engineering Days at five locations across the West Midlands, during Spring half term as part of a Royal Academy of Engineering Ingenious project.

Thinktank, Birmingham 19 February 2018 10:00 – 12:30
13:30 – 16:00
Soho House, Birmingham 20 February 2018 10:00 – 12:30
13:30 – 16:00
Aston Hall, Birmingham 21 February 2018 10:00 – 12:30
13:30 – 16:00
Grand Station, Wolverhampton 22 February 2018 10:00 – 12:30
13:30 – 16:00
Coventry Transport Museum 3 March 2018 10:00 – 12:30
13:30 – 16:00

To allow students from as many schools as possible to participate, The Smallpeice Trust is offering FREE places to Year 7, 8 & 9 students from our school to attend these Family Engineering Days with a parent/guardian.

Family Engineering Days are a free half-day event aimed at students and a parent/guardian to show how studying STEM subjects could potentially enhance their career prospects.

Held at locations around the West Midlands, graduate engineers and apprentices from automotive companies such as Aston Martin and Jaguar Land Rover will hold a Family Engineering Day for up to 60 Year 9 students and a parent/guardian. Each Family Engineering Day will last approximately two and a half hours and be run during either the morning or afternoon.

With the aim of bringing the STEM experience to families, parents/guardians are invited to take part and help their children with an automotive based challenge that is designed to be fun and educational for all involved. These activities are designed to complement the National Curriculum in science, technology, engineering and maths by demonstrating the link between what’s taught in the classroom with the wider world. They are especially beneficial for students in the process of choosing their CGSE options.

Family Engineering Days are supported by the Royal Academy of Engineering under the Ingenious Award scheme, an awards scheme that supports and funds the most creative and impactful projects that engage the public with engineers and engineering.

Further details for these Family Engineering Days and how to apply can be found at: https://www.smallpeicetrust.org.uk/free-family-engineering-days-book-now/

Vilte Skeberdyte Wins Local Final Future Chef Competition

10th January 2018Mrs D Curtis

The Local Final Future Chef Competition, part of a four stage nationwide culinary competition organised by Springboard, took place at St Edmund’s Catholic Academy today.

The judging panel consisted of Adrian Cousins, Regional Development Chef at Baxter Storey, and Chef Director Simon Denton, from Independent and former Executive Chef at The Swan at The Globe, London.

The competitors included Molly Kerrin, Kacper Siwiec, Vilte Skeberdyte from St Edmund’s and Liam Anslow and Finlay Bickerton from Burton Borough High School, Newport.

The judges watched over the competitors who were required to demonstrate practical skills, produce a selection of dishes, work in a methodical manner, produce a menu costing form and show an understanding of the nutritional value of their food.  Judges marked students on their workmanship, creativity and presentation, composition, taste and menu balance.

After much deliberation the winner of the Local Final FutureChef Competition was Vilte Skeberdyte.  Vilte has now won herself a place in the Regional Finals.

Congratulations to all our young chefs for their tremendous effort and beautifully presented food created today.

St Edmund’s Got Talent

21st December 2017Mrs D Curtis

Last Tuesday saw the first ever St Edmund’s Got Talent competition. Over 40 performers auditioned and those who got through were able to perform on the night.   There were some excellent performances from our Orchestra, our Rockband and a variety of singers, dancers and incredible instrumentalists.  This showcased the excellent talent which our Academy has to offer.  Third place was taken by Mia Davis and Maja Ura with their incredible dance routine.  Second place was taken by Lysia Bailey with her excellent piano performance which was undertaken blindfold!  First place was won by Caroline Fajime who performed a wonderful rendition of “Footprints in the Sand” bringing a tear to Miss Price’s eye!  A huge thank you to our three judges Mr Smith, Miss Price and Mr Garrity.   Thanks also to Grace and Leah, who compared, to Academy Representatives for funding the prizes, to the Senior Leadership Team for their support and to all the performers.

British Physics Olympiad Round 1 Success

20th December 2017Mrs D Curtis

In November two of our Year 13 Physics students Jakub Kolasa and Nathanael Haile entered the British Physics Olympiad Round 1. Over 1,740 students participated across the UK.

The paper was designed to stretch and challenge the top young physicists in the country. The results came back this week and both students were awarded a commendation.

They should both be congratulated for entering a competition that has such demanding questions and proved to be a real challenge for all the students that took part.

Well done.

Pastoral Team Spread Christmas Sparkle

19th December 2017Mrs D Curtis

Christmas is a time for giving and receiving of gifts but let us all not forget that families need a little extra boost to enable funds to go a little further for the extra little bit of Christmas sparkle.

The Pastoral Team have gathered donations from many different sources and compiled clean boxes packed with goods.  Laundry and toiletry products are some of the most expensive items that need to be bought.  Thanks to the generosity of others, some of our families will have less of a burden to carry over Christmas 2017.

Mr Selvey, Head of Year 9 said, “I would like to thank all of those who have donated for their generosity, especially the Deakin family who provided a bag full of hats, scarves, gloves and socks to help keep some people warm over the cold winter months”.

Well done Year 9.

Collection for the Brothers of the Good Shepherd Appeal

15th December 2017Mrs D Curtis

Mr Selvey, teacher of PE, decided to encourage purchases for the Good Shepherd instead of Christmas presents for his sons this year.

Mr Selvey said, “I encouraged those people who feel obliged to buy a £5 toy, just because it is Christmas, to purchase some things for the homeless. Our boys get enough and we wanted to give something to those who are less fortunate, especially at this time of year”.

Mr Selvey would like to thank all the people who have donated items for the appeal. Mr Katumba, Curriculum Leader RE, and two year students will be delivering the items on Thursday 21st December.
