Former Student Represents The Queen’s Royal Hussars in Bavaria

16th June 2017Mrs D Curtis

A former student at St Edmund’s Catholic Academy, Wolverhampton, described by his former Head of Year as ‘A bit of a tearaway in his early years!’ has certainly turned his life around and given his former secondary school something to be proud of!

St Edmund’s were recently advised that Trooper Levi Coyne, former student from 2006 to 2011, now aged 21, was one of four hundred soldiers who were involved in Exercise Saber Junction 17.  Levi played a key part in this exercise as driver of a Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank and was representing The Queen’s Royal Hussars in Bavaria, Southern Germany.  A total of 4,500 soldiers from 13 NATO contributing nations took part.

Levi commented ‘It has been very challenging.  The ground is very boggy and has lots of tight wood blocks making it difficult to manoeuvre around.  It’s not terrain we are familiar with so you have to be vigilant all the time to make sure a track doesn’t slip or that the tank gets bogged down.  Although I am a junior member of the crew we are all learning and it’s a case of remembering your key soldiering skills and working together to overcome problems when we encounter them’.

Levi, an avid Wolves supporter, said how much he was enjoying his time with the Regiment in Germany travelling and seeing many of the attractions that Europe has to offer.

Principal, Maggie Hughes commented, ‘I am happy that St Edmund’s has provided Levi with the learning, knowledge and skills to carry out this demanding role responsibly and courageously.  The opportunities with which he is being provided will help develop his character, resilience and spirit.  We are very proud of him indeed’.

Sixth Form Prayer Competition

15th June 2017Mrs D Curtis

We ran a Sixth Form Prayer Competition last term and the winners were Georgia Everiss (Year 12) and Isabella Rumpler-Hart (Year 12). Their prayer was chosen to be used in assemblies and in tutor periods across Sixth Form. It was a hard decision and we had some really touching and creative entries, but we felt that this prayer was perfect for everyday use in Sixth Form and had a real feeling of positivity, reflection and community. Both girls received a ÂŁ30 voucher and all entries received boxes of chocolates. The winning prayer as well as the other entries will be on display in Sixth Form.

The Pope’s request for a minutes silence for Peace

8th June 2017Mrs D Ferris

The Pope Requested a Minute Silence for Peace

Today our staff and students either had 1 minute of silent prayer for peace or said prayers for peace in their form time.

(Vatican Radio)  Pope Francis has appealed for prayers and international participation in the “One Minute for Peace” initiative to be held Thursday, 8 June, at 1:00 PM Rome time.

He said the initiative represents “a short moment of prayer on the recurrence of the meeting in the Vatican between me, the late Israeli President Peres, and the Palestinian President Abbas”.

Their encounter took place in the Vatican Gardens on 8 June 2014, during which the three men prayed together for peace.

The Holy Father said, “In our days, there is a great need to pray – Christians, Jews, and Muslims – for peace.”

His appeal came at the conclusion of his Wednesday General Audience in St. Peter’s Square.

Lightfever-Prayers for MANCHESTER

26th May 2017Mrs D Ferris
20170525_162607 (1)

On the Last Thursday of every month, the students are invited to the Chapel for ‘Lightfever’. This is always popular: the students come to light a candle, say a personal prayer and spend some quiet time to reflect.

Yesterday the students asked if they could light the candles for the people of Manchester, those who had died, for those were effected and the kindness of the people who helped.

The whole community observed a 1-minute silence at 11 o’clock and prayers will continue to be said.

God of compassion and mercy,

amidst the pain and trauma we turn to you,

for through Christ crucified we know that you have taken to heart the suffering of the people.

In fear and anxiety, strengthen us.

In despair and pain, comfort us.

In incomprehension and anger, reassure us that your love and life are stronger than the hatred and violence which overshadows Manchester and our country

Console those who carry a burden of loss, injury, or trauma and empower all who support them.

Strengthen all who seek to stand together in peace and unity.

We pray in the name of Jesus.  Amen.
