Good Shepherd Mass

7th June 2018Mrs D Ferris

On Tuesday 5th June many primary schools in the diocese, along with schools from the Bishop Cleary MAC, including St Edmund’s Catholic Academy, gathered together at St Michael’s Catholic Church in Penn to celebrate ‘The Good Shepherd’ Mass.

The choir and a group of musicians from St. Edmund’s Catholic Academy provided the music and were led by Mr Bard. Students from the different schools in attendance read the scripture and bidding prayers, including two students from St Edmund’s.  Four of our Altar Servers did us proud and were a credit to themselves and our school.

Students brought gifts during the offertory and offered donations they had helped to raise money for, for the Father Hudson Society. Some of the ‘Hope Community’ also joined us to celebrate Mass. The Hope Community Project is based in Wolverhampton and is one of the many causes that the Father Hudson Society supports.

Unfortunately, Bishop David couldn’t be with us but Monsignor Mark Crisp did a fabulous job of stepping in.  He led us all in a prayer about being a ‘Good Shepherd’ to one another, one very important way that we can Love and Serve the Lord.

Schools’ Poppy Remembrance Event

18th May 2018Mrs D Curtis

The City of Wolverhampton Council would like to invite city schools to attend the Schools’ Poppy Remembrance Event on Friday 9 November 2018, from approximately 10am – noon. This will commemorate 100 years since the end of the First World War and recognise soldiers who died but do not feature on formal rolls of honour.

At the event, the children and young people attending will have the opportunity to parade with the military from Dudley Street to the Cenotaph outside St Peter’s Church, where they will attend a short outdoor remembrance service (approximately 30 minutes). If the weather conditions do not permit an outdoor service, the service will take place in St Peter’s Church.

The City Archives is currently undertaking research to identify those soldiers who are not currently included on the Roll of Honour to ensure we capture all those men and women who lost their lives.

We would like children and young people from schools across the city to make a poppy (a template will be provided). Each poppy will represent a soldier from Wolverhampton who died during the First World War and participants will be asked to write the name of their soldier on one of the poppy’s petals.

At the reception following the Remembrance Service the poppies will be attached to a mesh sheet. The poppies will be displayed in St Peter’s Square for Remembrance weekend.

If you would like to take part, please register your interest by Friday 29 June 2018 – you can do so by clicking here: Register . For more information email wolverhamptonremembers@wolverhampton.gov.uk or call 01902 556708. Some subsided transport will be available to support schools to attend the event.

The Feast of Ascension

9th May 2018Mrs D Ferris

Tomorrow, Thursday 10th May we celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of Lord ; as we celebrate this beautiful Feast, we remember the promise and invitation of the Lord, the promise is the Gift of the Holy Spirit, the invitation was to return to Jerusalem and await this promised gift. The Church invites us to wait and pray, may we do so with Pope John XXlll’s ‘lnvocation’ Prayer:

‘Renew Your wonders in this our day,

as by a new Pentecost.

Grant to Your Church that,

Being of one mind and steadfast in prayer with Mary,

the Mother of Jesus, and following the

lead of blessed Peter,

it may advance the reign of our Divine Saviour,

the reign of truth

and justice, the reign of love and peace.

Debate Mate Cup Competition

9th May 2018Mrs D Curtis

On Thursday 19 April, fourteen Debate Mate students were lucky enough to travel to the University of Birmingham to compete in the Debate Mate Cup.  The university buildings shone in glorious sunshine and our debaters were a little awestruck at the size of the campus.  Wonder aside, their concentration was not lost and they set their sights on preparing their speeches.

A challenging prepared motion on the United Nations Council showed an outstanding understanding of the world they live in.  Our teams then got to work on two unprepared motions and impressed the judges so much they attained some of the highest scores ever awarded.  The competition also included a show debate, led by Debate Mate staff, which gave our students many ideas.  An intense and public final debate gave our students further insight into effective debating skills that they are keen to try out in the future.

The competition was a thoroughly enjoyable experience for students and staff alike and our Debate Mate students are looking forward to participating in some of their own show debates very soon.

Sleep Easy Event at St Edmund’s

8th May 2018Mrs D Curtis

25 Sixth Form students braved the elements on the night of Friday 16 March.  Their aim – to sleep in makeshift cardboard accommodation in the grounds of St Edmund’s – to experience what sleeping rough is like for a homeless person.  The weather could not have been worse – driving rain, sleet and really cold conditions but students did us proud, keeping cheerful and determined despite it all!  At one point Mr McArdle, Head of Year 11, one of the supervisors of the event, was found asleep having rolled down a slope in his blankets in the middle of the courtyard!!!

Students raised the amazing sum of £872.75 for their efforts for the YMCA Homeless charity.  Every penny donated was well earned by those who slept out on such an awful night.

Grateful thanks to our students, Mr McArdle and Mr Tolley
