Spanish Success

5th March 2019Mrs D Curtis

So far this year Year 10 have done a lot of work with Mr Selvey and their form tutors about various ways to revise practically and finding strategies to help their learning ‘stick’ (making it memorable enough to remember, especially when it comes to exam season!).   Miss Rainey has also been challenging Year 10 Spanish GCSE students to take a more independent, creative approach to their learning through homework tasks and many students have produced some wonderful pieces of work since the challenge started back in October.

Contributions have varied massively – from students who have demonstrated their cooking skills by making a delicious range of hispanic treats such as paella or churros to others who have investigated their Spanish horoscopes and analysed the truth behind the predictions. There have also been students who watched and translated popular Disney songs like Bajo del Mar (Under the Sea) and Suéltalo (Let it Go) or even translated their favourite songs into Spanish. Other contributions have seen some brave students take on the teaching role at home and teach their family members some of the Spanish basics and Henok Haile even translated Martin Luther King’s inspirational speech: “Tengo un sueño” (I have a dream).

Whilst these students have all shown a fantastic standard of independent study, there have been two students who have contributed in a particularly outstanding way and the MFL department feel very excited and proud to share these with our community.

Bethany has amazed us with her blend of artistic talents and witty storyboard by creating her very own Spanish comic. She drafted the ideas for the story and has brought to life a world of characters who use the very Spanish she has learnt in the classroom!

Eesha found a way to improve her listening skills whilst also channeling her creativity by watching a Mexican crafting blogger’s video, finding out any unknown vocabulary and then creating the masterpiece seen in the photograph above! Given the nature of challenge in the Spanish instructions and complex crafting, this piece of work took Eesha no less than two days. She demonstrated such commitment to learning that Mrs Hazeldine, Principal, and one of our very own governors both expressed their pride and congratulations to Eesha’s inspirational attitude to learning in person on Friday 1 March. Eesha has kindly given this piece of work to MFL department, so please feel free to come and check out Eesha’s hard work on the top floor in languages!

Well done to all the language students who are consistently demonstrating such high aspirations in Spanish!

Mrs Lowe Retires After 40 Years Library Service

15th February 2019Mrs D Curtis

Today marked the beginning of a new chapter for Mrs Lowe, the Academy Librarian.

After serving St Edmund’s Catholic Academy for 20 years, Mrs Lowe decided it was time to turn the page in her book and start a new chapter called retirement.

Mrs Lowe spent 20 years working for Sandwell Council Library Services before joining St Edmund’s in June 1999. Her unique specialist role included supporting students’ learning and their development into effective, independent learners and readers.

Mrs Lowe’s determination to give students the opportunity to broaden their knowledge and experience, resulted in the commissioning of poets and authors to deliver workshops in the Academy.  This fun and engaging activity inspired reading amongst the students.

Mrs Lowe was presented with cards, gifts and flowers today.  However, it was the handmade posters and the presentation by Year 7 students that bought a tear to her eye.

Thank you Mrs Lowe for your commitment and dedication to the St Edmund’s community over the last 20 years. Enjoy and embrace the next chapter.

Harry Potter Studios Trip

6th February 2019Mrs D Curtis

On Wednesday 16th January 49 Design and Technology students from year 10, 12 and 13 embarked on a visit to the Harry Potter Studios in Watford North London.

During the visit students where shown how artist, designers, carpenters, computer programmers. Costume designers and set builders turned J.K Rowling’s series of books into the visually stunning movie series.  The visit allowed the students alternative career paths that technology can take you and see the importance creative skills has in the world of work.

The students got to see the various different props that were used along with the creatures that were created and how they were brought to life.  Students also got to walk around the various sets such as Privet Drive, The Leaky Cauldron, the Forbidden Forest and Diagon Alley.  Students also got to test their skills at flying a broom and their wand skills.  Some students even had the opportunity to try the interesting taste of Butterbeer that was met with mixed reviews.

The students and staff had a fantastic time and all students behaved perfectly and represented themselves and the school extremely well.  Thank you to all the staff who attended and helped with the organisation of the trip.
