St Edmund’s is currently working towards our Live Simply award.

The LiveSimply award, run by CAFOD, is an opportunity for our academy community to respond to the Church’s call to live simply, sustainably and in solidarity with the world’s poorest. It is an invitation to follow in the footsteps of Jesus who lived and preached a simple life, and to take meaningful action on the ecological crisis we face today.

Through the LiveSimply award scheme our students and staff will:

  • Learn about the connection between their faith and the environmental and social crises
  • Respond with faith inspired actions
  • Be empowered as active citizens to bring about positive change

We are working towards nine goals, which are outlined below.

World Peace Day

The Chaplaincy team consists of a selection of students from all year groups. They will work with the Youth Ministry worker to deliver World Peace Day assemblies to all year groups. We will particularly think of the people in, and displaced from, countries impacted by war and conflict.

Sleep Easy Event

Students will camp out overnight on school grounds to raise money and awareness for the YMCA homelessness work.

Charity Walk and Litter Pick

Students in years 7-10 and 12 will walk 8 miles in the local community, litter picking as they walk. Students are sponsored to complete the walk and the money is donated to one of our three chosen charities for the year.

Senior Citizens’ Christmas Party

We will invite 100 senior citizens from the local community into the academy for a Christmas party. Students will serve food and drinks to the senior citizen’s, play games and perform music and singing entertainment.

Fairtrade Stall

Students will run a Fairtrade stall during Fairtrade fortnight to raise awareness about fair working conditions and pay, and protecting our shared environment. We will continue the Fairtrade for the term to maximise the impact and opportunity for students to get involved.

Live Simply Pledges

Students, parents/carers, staff and governors will be invited to make a Live Simply pledge and these will be displayed in the academy as a daily reminder.

Eco and gardening club

All students are invited to participate in Eco and gardening clubs as extracurricular activities. The groups complete a range of activities from produced awareness materials to use in school, litter picking, planting flowers etc.

St Edmund’s Larder

Our Academy foodbank – a discrete area of school is going to be set up by the Chaplaincy group and Inter-faith council as a food bank. Tutor groups and staff will donate items which can be taken by members of the school community as and when needed.

Young People Demand Change

We will use CAFOD’s resources Young People Demand Change” to support our work around raising awareness about COP28 – the Eco club will plan and deliver an assembly on COP28 and provide resources for tutor groups to use. To ensure we are able to stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the poorest countries, most impacted by climate change, we will write to the government to ensure the poorest countries are at the forefront of any decisions made.
