Y9 Careers Event

30th January 2017Mrs D Curtis

St Edmund’s, with the support of Carol Codner, Education Business Advisor, held a Careers Fair earlier this week following a school review of careers, enterprise and employability activity.

There were 24 exhibitors from both industry and education who came together to showcase the opportunities available to students after completing their studies at St Edmund’s.  Members of our Sixth Form also joined the exhibition and shared valuable information, guidance and the benefits of completing A Level’s at St Edmund’s.

All exhibitors gave practical advice, careers guidance and information to students in Years 9,10 and 12. Feedback from students and staff, following the event, was very positive. Exhibitors thoroughly enjoyed the event.  They were so impressed with our students. The commitment to the task, the quality of the questions asked and how polite and well-mannered they were.

Nigel Moorhouse, Enterprise Adviser, commented, “I think it’s wonderful to see that St Edmund’s has embraced the Careers and Enterprise Company initiative, through working with Wolverhampton City Council and UTC to feature careers guidance within the school and preparing young people for the world of work.  In today’s event 350 students have been exposed to 24 different organisations, including local employers, colleges, universities and training providers.  The response and enthusiasm of the students has been overwhelming in their thirst to find information about careers.  This is the third event that I have been involved with and it is a big well done to Mr Katumba and his team for their efforts and organising this important event.”

Rebecca Ward from Walsall College said, ” The key thing to remember is whatever route is chosen after GCSEs, whether it’s A Levels, BTECs or an Apprenticeship, students need to work hard to achieve good pass marks in their GCSEs to unlock the doors to their future”.

Many thanks to all exhibitors for contributed to this highly successful event.

Spiritual Sanctity: St Edmund’s Day Mass

15th December 2016Mr N Sohker

20161130-IMG_9206

By Leah James

On the 30 November St Edmunds had their St Edmund’s Day Mass. This was to mark the School’s patron saint and the end of the Year of Mercy.

Blessed Edmund Campion was an English Roman Catholic  Priest and martyr, canonised in 1980 by Pope Paul VI.

Monsignor Mark was delighted to be supported by Fr Paul Whieldon, Fr Pawel Bielak and Fr Simon Baker who was visiting from Birmingham, also concelebrated. The mass took place in the Kristian Thomas Sports Hall. The St Edmund’s Choir, who had been practising for weeks, sang the psalm and other songs which was very angelic. In his homily, Father Mark talked about reaching the end of the Year of Mercy. The Altar Servers were very pleased to welcome seven new altar servers from Year 7.

At the end of the mass head teacher Mrs Hughes presented, Monsignor Mark with an Italian hamper and a bouquet of flowers from the school. This was to mark his 25th year since his ordination into priesthood and to say thank you for his chaplaincy work with the school.

To celebrate the end of the Year of Mercy, Miss Mifflin and some Year 10’s, put together a mosaic picture of Jesus, which is now hanging in the Peace Garden. Monsignor Mark blessed and unveiled the picture in the Peace Garden.

St Edmunds Catholic Academy would like to thank all the guests who came to the mass and to those who took part. Especially, to those who read the readings and bidding prayers: Saffron Sadiq, James Johnson, Niamh Young and George Bryant.

Sixth Form Serve Our Senior Community During Party

15th December 2016Mr N Sohker

By Leah James

Christmas is a time of caring and kindness so every Sixth Form raise funds towards the Senior Citizens Party.

As a school who raises lots of money for charity, St Edmund’s Sixth Form put together a small party during the last periods of the day, into the evening for the elderly from around Compton. This is a great opportunity for those, who don’t have any family, to come and join in the St Edmund’s community.

Year 12 serve the food to the guests, which Ms Hall and her busy kitchen team make. The Upper Sixth (Year 13) sit down and talk with the elderly from the local community. Entertainment is provided by Miss Baskeyfield, who puts on a show with help from the Choir who sing a selection of well known carols.

The Folk band and Orchestra also put on a small piece for the special guests to hear whilst eating the lovely food. The money from children in need and other events are split to provide for the party. The senior citizens party takes place in the arena which is completely transformed into a festive party venue, with tinsel, baubles and lights.

Organising the event is new Head of Sixth Form, Miss Roach, and Mrs Hogg. The party which goes on every year gives the elderly comfort and joy, and a chance to take part in a event ran by children.  As a school which raises money for Compton Hospice, St Edmund’s is well known for their high standard parties and entertainment.

Christmas Concert

14th December 2016Mrs D Curtis

On 7th December we saw the return of the St. Edmund’s Christmas Concert where a host of talented students from different clubs and groups got together to kick off the festive season with a bang! Orchestra set the bar for the evening with their wonderful medley of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and the Suite from the Polar Express. The audience then got their first chance to join in by singing along to The First Noel before the Folk Band played a rousing set of Celtic tunes with the audience clapping along. The newly formed Rock Band then took to the stage with two fantastic numbers;7 Years and Mercy.  Y7 pupil Nicole Fajimeye was cool and confident in her role as lead singer and the band was extremely professional. The audience got back in the festive spirit with the Woodwind Ensemble’s rendition of Wonderful Christmas Time before solo performance from Christina Clifton and Sinead Cullen-Barratt -one of our ‘Killer Queens’ from our upcoming production of We Will Rock You with S. Peter’s. Finally the St. Edmund’s Choir took to the stage with a range of festive pieces; John Rutter’s Angel’s Carol, an alternative arrangement of Away in a Manger and the groovy Calypso Carol. The evening ended with all the performers joining in with the audience for We Wish You a Merry Christmas. The evening was wonderfully festive and a fantastic opportunity for our musical talent to showcase what they’ve been working on this term. Miss Baskeyfield and Mrs Roberts want to say a huge thank you to all the staff, parents and students for making the Christmas Concert possible. St Edmund’s will soon be starting preparations for their summer tour to Belgium!

14th December 2016Mrs D Curtis

Tom Springthorpe, former Deputy Head Boy in 2014/15 and currently studying for a degree in medicine at Manchester University,  joined our year 12 medics group on Thursday 1st December to share his experience and insight into university life.  There was an opportunity for a question and answer session and Tom advised the students how to make their UCAS applications stand out from the rest.

We wish Tom every success in his future career.

Isobel and Sam are Bake Off Winners

9th December 2016Mrs D Curtis

Congratulations to Sam Munger and Isobel Rafferty who came 5th and 6th place in the Bake Off Final at Highfields School this year.

Judging was based not just on overall appearance but on the quality of the actual Victoria Sandwich cake produced. You can see images of our star bakers engrossed in creating their designs and taking part in a cupcake decorating workshop, which was organised whilst cakes were cooling prior to decoration.

Mrs Bates, Food Technology Teacher, said “It was a very enjoyable event and I look forward to entering our students again next year”.
