JULY 2021 “Unity”

13th July 2021Mr B Thompson

July 12th 2021: Unity

Like most people, I watched England play Italy in the final of the euros last night and my heart sank when they were beaten in the cruellest part of the game –Ā  the penalty shootout. When I woke this morning the news was filled with the racist abuse that some of the players had endured,Ā  as vile and cowardly messages were left on social media platforms.Ā

My heart sank when England lost,Ā  but it broke when I thought about how these amazing young role models have been faced with hatred and prejudice via social media.Ā

At St Ed’s we want to say congratulations to our national team. We are in awe of your skill, your spirit and most of all your strength.Ā  You represent the sort of unity in diversity that is our mission too.Ā

In our Academy, we will continue to ā€œcall outā€ discrimination in all of its ignorant forms. As a teacher and a parent, we must protect our young people from this sort of abuse. On the last day of term I will be asking all students to think carefully about their use of social media during the holidays.Ā

Now that students are all free to mix (responsibly) again, how sad would it be, if they spent the next 6 weeks attached to a phone…..

May 2021 ā€œEdieā€

25th May 2021Mr B Thompson

May 25th 2021: ā€œEdieā€

Well this month’s blog finds us all shivering and damp in total contrast to the same time last year.Ā

I do have some exciting news in the arrival of ā€œEdieā€ who will be our well-being puppy (and later, dog!ā€)Ā  I decided to call her Edie (after St Edmund!) if the puppy was a boy but we have the female version in our sweet little Edie. She is currently only 10 weeks old and lives with me but when she has completed her therapy training ( yes, even dogs do exams at St Edmund’s!) she will be part of the community.

In a time of increased anxiety after all that lockdown has thrown at us, Edie will be available for puppy care (year 7 and 8), walks and visits to the library, the sixth form and the pastoral team. Our young people who wish to join the puppy club will be able to develop their nurturing skills and benefit from the joy of this little bundle of fur! Students who need a little support with their emotional and mental health, can choose to spend some time with Edie to increase a sense of well-being. It is certainly helping me! I haven’t stopped smiling since she has arrived.

So our year 11 and 13 students left last week. We had lots of laughter and a few tears and I felt so privileged to be able to share their last Mass and their last assembly with them. The year 7 pictures of our year 11 leavers and the ā€œmost likely toā€¦ā€ certificates had us all in stitches! They have all inspired me so much with their resilience to all that has happened. They were aspirational, worked hard, made no excuses and really made me so proud to work at St Edmund’s. I can’t wait to see what they all do next.Ā

A glimmer of sunshine has just fallen upon the peace garden and I think we are all praying for the return of last year’s sunshine for our half-term break. If not, it will be more wet and soggy mornings with Edie in the garden for me! Happy half term everyone

March 2021

31st March 2021Mr B Thompson

March 31st: DAFFODILS

If you have been ā€œdropping offā€ at St Edmund’s in the last few weeks, you will have noticed the beautiful daffodils ā€œtossing their heads in sprightly danceā€ (Wordsworth, not me!).Ā

I love daffodils.Ā

They are the most joyous of spring flowers and their resilience to the strangest of weathers and the absolute certainty that they will reflower each year,Ā  gives me great sustenance.Ā Ā

In fact, these flowers before the chapel are a good metaphor for our community right now – individually we may be delicate but together we are strong and joyous. We are back together, supporting each other, thankful that, this year, we have been able to celebrate the Easter liturgy as a community.Ā Ā

Over the last month staff and students have been very busy. Two weeks of intensive lateral flow testing on site has now turned into home testing kits distributed to all staff and students.Ā

As I walk the corridors I see high engagement in lessons as teachers and students work hard to ensure any learning gaps caused by lockdown have been addressed.

Finally, our young people continue to serve those who need our help with huge boxes of Easter Eggs being delivered to local charities.Ā Ā

The sun is shining today although Mrs Letheren tells me to expect snow next week!Ā  Last-minute and unexpected change has become a daily part of post COVID schools but we are thriving thanks to our wonderful students, families and staff.Ā

I wish you all a happy and Holy Easter and hope you are able to enjoy a few extra freedoms as we move closer to lockdown. Please tune in for our final Easter liturgy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SlgMUjcQl3Q) and join us as we reflect on the true meaning of this blessed time.

February 2021

25th February 2021Mr B Thompson

February 25th 2021; ā€œNormalā€

So we are all busy at St Edmund’s planning for the reopening of our school on March 8th. Setting up a mass testing centre in the Sports Hall is something I did not ever expect would be part of my working life and I thank God every day for the amazing staff I work with,Ā  who simply apply themselves to whatever needs to be done. This is such a St Edmund’s trait.Ā Ā

(By the way,Ā  thank you all for such wonderful responses to our home working resource pack programme. Our staff delivered a pack to every child at St Edmund’s and I could not be more proud of this community spirit.)

So. We are all looking forward to some sort of normal returning and I’m sure you are too. But what is ā€œnormalā€ anyway? Conforming to the usual? Returning to the pre-COVID times?

Well yes and no!

We are so looking forward to face to face teaching (even if it will be behind masks for a while longer) We strongly advise all pupils to take part in the COVID LFT testing at school and as soon as the first tests are completed, we will be back to class!Ā Ā

We all miss the social contact with our students and each other and we will make sure there is plenty of time for them to catch up with us and each other, to socialise, to get outside in the sunshine.

I am also very aware, however,Ā  that there are some things that will not return to normal for everyone at the same time. Some will have become happy working from home, some will have struggled. We are ready to support everyone, each in their own time.Ā

Therefore,Ā  once more, a big ā€œshout outā€ to all of our home schoolers. Whatever your level of skill and knowledge of your child’s education, I bet it has increased ten-fold over the last 12 months! We are so excited to see them all and have absolute confidence that they will be back on track very soon.Ā

I notice the sun is shining today….. Time for my daily exercise

God Bless

January 2021

28th January 2021Mr B Thompson

Dear Parents, Carers, Staff, Students and Friends of St Edmund’s,

In the recent parent survey a few parents have asked me for a regular blog/update on life at the academy, particularly as, during these days of lockdown, we cannot meet in person. So – this is my first attempt!Ā  I have decided to call the blog ā€œMrs Hazeldine’s word of the weekā€ because, well, I am an English teacher and I LOVE words, and also because I find words are my best friend when trying to bring order to a chaotic world.

So, this week’s word:Ā

ā€œUNPRECEDENTEDā€Ā

I think we have all heard this word more in the last year, than we may have done in our lives! Unprecedented means ā€œnever done or known beforeā€. If I reflect on what this means for St Edmund’s, there are lots of examples.Ā

Just some of the things we’ve ā€œnever doneā€Ā  before….

  • Delivered live lessons into the homes of every student at St Ed’s – including P.E.!
  • Delivered a chromebook to the home of every student who did not have access to a device to ensure that no student can fall behind due to lack of technology
  • Delivered revision packs to the houses of all students who require additional resources
  • Delivered violins and keyboards to the houses of our music students so that they can keep on practising!
  • Trained ourselves in how to carry out lateral flow testing and set up a LFT centre in one day
  • Made sure that every vulnerable student can work from school should they wish and receive a daily or weekly phone call to ā€œcheck-inā€ if they are at homeĀ Ā

Unprecedented also means things that have never ā€œbeen knownā€ before. What have I ā€œnever knownā€ ?Ā

I have never known such support, such resilience in a group of people I have worked with. I have never known such joy in everyday things -crunching across the snow, learning to use a crockpot! Ā  I have never known just how important my faith is to me, keeping me grounded, giving me hope, holding my balance.Ā

The road does seem long at the moment. We don’t know when our school will reopen – after half-term? after Easter? As a human who likes to be in control, it is very difficult for me to say to you all ā€œI just don’t knowā€.Ā

What I do know is that we should all feel secure that learning is taking place every day. St Edmund’s isn’t a building. It is what is happening right now in your homes. With the right technology, the best lessons, a pastoral team determined to support every student’s well being and our commitment to prayer, we are prepared, we will not let you down.

Stay safe,Ā  God Bless

Maggie Hazeldine

(News just in! Gavin Williamson says that we will (ā€œhopefullyā€) reopen on 8th March. )Ā
