Feast of the English Martyrs

4th May 2023Mrs D Curtis

On this day we remember the martyrdom of 40 men and women who were executed between 1535 and 1679 for treason and related offences under various laws enacted by Parliament during the English Reformation. 25th October is a sister day to this event which commemorates the Welsh members of the group. Amongst these people was our patron saint, St Edmund Campion, who was arrested while conducting an underground Catholic ministry in an officially Anglican England.

Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. –  Matthew 10:28

Niven Secures BBC Data Science Apprenticeship

3rd May 2023Mrs D Curtis

Niven Rooprah, a Year 13 student, has successfully secured a position in the prestigious BBC Data Science Apprenticeship programme in collaboration with York St John University. This remarkable opportunity will enable Niven to embark on a journey of professional growth and development.

The apprenticeship is based in Salford and adopts a blended learning approach, combining remote instruction with on-site visits to the York St John campuses in York and London. The BBC generously covers all expenses related to accommodation and travel during these visits, ensuring Niven’s seamless participation in the program.

Notably, the government’s apprenticeship levy will fund Niven’s university fees, fully covering the cost of his degree. This invaluable support further enhances Niven’s educational journey.

We take great pride in Niven’s accomplishments thus far and extend our heartfelt wishes for his continued success in all his future endeavors.

Screen Free Week

2nd May 2023Mrs D Curtis

Everyone has the ability to create their own lives.

In screen-free week we have an opportunity to create a new life for ourselves with the hobbies we choose outside of electronics. We can use this time away from screens to reflect on our lives and what we can achieve. This week we can focus on our mental health and wellbeing. With time away from screens we can pursue other hobbies and activities that benefit our wellbeing. Things such as walking outdoors or spending time in nature can give us a mental boost and this week is a great time to try this out.

The earth’s the LORD’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for he founded it on the seas and established it on the waters. – Psalm 24:1

Deaf Awareness Week

2nd May 2023Mrs D Curtis

All people are created in the image of God. This means that all human life is sacred.

In this week of awareness it is right that we remember this and do all we can to become deaf friendly. We must do what we can to ensure that all people are treated properly and with respect. By being a deaf friendly community this is able to happen. It is important that we learn about deafness and incorporate this knowledge into our everyday lives. This way we can make a better society for all.

Do not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block in front of the blind, but fear your God. I am the LORD. – Leviticus 19:14

Year 8 Rugby Success

27th April 2023Mrs D Curtis

Congratulations to four St Edmund’s students who took part in an annual rugby tournament with their team from Wolverhampton Rugby Club.

The tournament was organised by Leicester Tigers and it was held at Butlins, Bognor Regis. Clubs from all over London and the south attended and after the 6 games they finished 4th out of 17 teams.- A fantastic achievement especially as one student has only just recently joined the club.

Players: Charlie Smallman, Owen Davies , Nate Guy and Curtis Junior.

I would also like to thank Mr Smallman, who is a coach at Wolverhampton Rugby Club, for running an extra-curricular rugby club at St Edmund’s. The students have loved it! Thank you and hope to see you next year!

World Malaria Day

25th April 2023Mrs D Curtis
World Malaria Day serves to remind us of the threat malaria still causes and that there is still work to be done to combat this disease. We are reminded that we must work towards the common good and look beyond our own interests. Fighting to end malaria will benefit many people. The majority of these people do not have sufficient access to healthcare facilities. It is vital that we prioritise the most vulnerable in society. It is in these areas where we can fight against malaria in the most effective way.
Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. So he bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait for them.
At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them.
– Luke 4:38-40
