St John of God was born in 1495 in Granada, Spain. He was a successful farmer, soldier, and merchant before he devoted his life to God at the age of 42. He founded the order of Brothers Hospiallers who devoted themselves to the service of the poor in body and soul. He is patron saint of booksellers, heart patients, hospitals, nurses, the sick, and firefighters.
Saint Perpetua and Saint Felicity (believed to have died in 203CE) were Christian martyrs of the 3rd Century. Vibia Perpetua was a married noblewoman, said to have been 22 years old at the time of her death, and mother of an infant she was nursing. Felicity, a slave imprisoned with her and pregnant at the time, was martyred with her. They were put to death along with others at Carthage in the Roman province of Africa.
This week is about raising awareness of domestic violence and sexual assault in the UK. Silence and lack of knowledge about domestic violence and sexual assault play a large part in why they persist.
