Day in the Life of an ex-Sixth Form Prefect – Part One

11th October 2024Rowan Ridley

Meet Tabitha Kirby, our 2023/24 Head Prefect. Since leaving St Edmund’s Sixth Form in July 2024, Tabitha has embarked on her higher education journey in Geology and Physical Geography at the University of Birmingham. Tabitha was kind enough to let us in on a glimpse of a Day in the Life of an ex-Sixth Form Prefect!

Morning guys! Join me for a day as a geology and physical geography student.

To get to Uni I get a lift to the train station and then get a train before walking to my campus and finding my lecture.

And of course, Food is fuel so I treated myself to a croissant and a rhubarb lemonade.

Walking to my first lecture studying Stratigraphical Measurements and Tutorial Meeting.

Lecture Time! We learnt about what Stratigraphy is and the different types of rock recognition.

All done and same journey home! Thank you for spending the day with me!

Prefect Podcast – Episode 1

7th October 2024Mrs D Curtis

The St Edmund’s Sixth Form prefects are thrilled to introduce their very first podcast featuring Principal Mrs Hazeldine! This exciting new venture aims to engage the school community and provide a platform for insightful discussions about school life.

In this inaugural episode, the prefects will delve into Mrs Hazeldine’s journey to becoming a principal, sharing the experiences and challenges she faced along the way. Listeners will gain a deeper understanding of her vision for St Edmund’s and the dedication required to lead an educational institution. As we embark on this journey, let’s remember the words of Saint Oscar Romero: “Aspire not to have more but to be more.” reflecting our commitment to personal growth and community enhancement.

Additionally, the podcast will highlight memorable moments from Mrs Hazeldine’s time at St Edmund’s, giving students a chance to connect with the school’s history and its vibrant community. This is a fantastic opportunity for everyone to listen, learn, and reflect on what makes St Edmund’s a special place.

Tune in to catch this engaging conversation and join the prefects as they embark on this exciting new chapter! https://www.stedmundssixthform.co.uk/social-media/

St Edmunds Celebrates Successful Open Evening with Record Attendance

3rd October 2024Mrs D Curtis
The academy opened its doors this evening to showcase what an amazing place it is for students to learn, and thrive as a member of the St Edmund’s family.
The event offered prospective students and families an engaging opportunity to explore the facilities, meet staff, and get a first-hand look at the vibrant community and academic programs that St Edmund’s offers.
The evening kicked off with a warm welcome from Principal Maggie Hazeldine who provided an overview of the academy values, curriculum, and achievements.  Attendees had the opportunity to participate in guided tours led by student ambassadors, who also shared their personal experiences and highlighted key facilities.
With a record number of attendees, we believe the Open Evening has been a great success.

Ecomonics Comes to life

2nd October 2024Mrs D Curtis

During economics today Mrs Gill was hard at work bringing the joy of the derived demand labour curve to life!

In the case of labour demand, it is derived from the demand for a product or a service that labour produces.

Fun was had by all sixth-formers.

Dexter the IQM Bear visits St Edmund’s!

30th September 2024Rowan Ridley

Dexter is the Inclusion Quality Mark (IQM) mascot who has travelled from Ireland to visit our school, such a long way for his little paws. For more information on Dexter’s travels around the UK click here: https://iqmaward.com/dexters-days/

What has Dexter gotten up to in his time at St Edmunds?

Dexter had to attend many exciting meetings with Jasper to discuss continuous professional development and share ideas on the best and most effective practices to help inspire the students.

Jasper and Samuel helped prepare for a Drawing & Talking session in EDEN, keeping a calm space, and welcomed Dexter into his first session.

Dexter was not short of attention from our Year 7s during their break times, Dexter helped them to relax and destress and shared how important it is to take a break as well as being active learners in lessons.

Targeted skills development in after school business sessions – VI Form

27th September 2024Mrs D Curtis
** A Path to Academic Success** In today’s education system, students face increasing demands to master various skills, one of the most essential being the ability to write clearly and effectively. Writing is the foundation of communication across all academic disciplines, and essay writing, in particular, tests students’ critical thinking, analytical abilities, and expression of ideas. However, many students struggle with this skill, which can negatively impact their academic progress. This is where after-school essay writing interventions come in with a targeted approach to improving student writing skills in a supportive and focused environment.

These programs typically run outside regular school hours and focus on key areas such as essay structure, grammar, clarity of thought, thesis development, and editing. They are often personalised to meet the unique needs of individual students.

These sessions not only help students refine their writing but also build their confidence in their ability to express their thoughts in written form.

**Targeted Skill Development** Many students struggle with essay writing because they haven’t mastered the specific skills needed, such as organising thoughts logically, using evidence effectively, or developing a strong thesis.

Meet Jasper – Our ‘Pawsitive Impact Officer’

27th September 2024Rowan Ridley

Jasper is our friendly Pawsitive Impact Officer here to help students who need a little bit of extra support from our cuddly pal throughout the day. Jasper helps our students to take a moment of calmness throughout their day and have a break from all the hard work that they do.

Jasper frequently makes an appearance during breaktimes and lunchtimes in the foyer for any students who want to say hello. Jasper also takes time out of his very busy schedule to welcome students into the academy on many mornings with a wet nose and a wagging tail, seeing Jasper in the morning is the perfect way to start the day.

Delicious Macmillan Cake Sale

27th September 2024Mrs D Curtis

As part of our European Day of Languages celebrations, parents and carers of our new Year 7 were invited to join us for a ‘European Day of Languages’ themed Macmillan Coffee Morning, between 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. today.  All funds raised from the sale will go to Macmillan Cancer Support who help raise vital funds to support over 3 million people living with cancer in the UK.

Students also had the opportunity to get involved in the cake sale at specific times throughout the day and were encouraged to come to the academy wearing clothes to represent a country from Europe.

Thank you to all parents and carers who came along to support the cake sale and help us to continue building the strength of our parent partnership and thank you to Miss Blanchette, Curriculum Leader for Modern Foreign Languages for organising the event.
