Mrs Hughes and Mrs Wrenshall-Jones visit Buckingham Palace

The sun shone brightly on Monday 16 May when Mrs Hughes and Mrs Wrenshall-Jones visited Buckingham Palace to help celebrate the 60th Anniversary of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.  HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, K.G., K.T., Founder, HRH The Earl of Wessex, K.G.,G.C.V.O., Trustee and HRH The Countess of Wessex, G.C.V.O were in attendance.

Mrs Hughes and Mrs Wrenshall-Jones were allocated to group 44, which included English Rugby Union footballer Danny Cipriani and Sports Presenter Jim Rosenthal (pictured below).

Mrs Hughes advised that it was a wonderful day of celebration and that the gardens were absolutely stunning.  She said it was difficult to believe that you were in the heart of London, apart from the noise of the traffic, of course!

Rob Marris MP visits St Edmund’s

Rob Marris, MP for Wolverhampton South West came to visit St Edmund’s on Friday 13 May.  His visit was as a result of a letter he had received from IFS University College informing him of outstanding work at St Edmund’s.

Mr Marris met with Mrs Hughes and Mr Auger, who gave him a lot of information about how our students are prepared for employment. Mr Marris took a great deal of interest in our new academy.  It was his first visit.  Mr Marris said, following a tour of the academy, that we have good facilities and purposeful spaces.

Maundy Thursday

On Maundy Thursday the whole school attended a Solemn Liturgy depicting the story of the Last Supper and Jesus washing the Disciples feet.

Mrs Ferris the Lay Chaplain told the story and introduced each Disciple in turn, explaining the parts the disciples had played in serving Jesus.
Students including the 6th form acted the story. Washed the Disciples feet which (John 13:1–17) occurred in the upper room, just prior to the Last Supper and has significance in three ways. For Jesus, it was the display of his humility and his servant hood. For the disciples, the washing of their feet was in direct contrast to their heart attitudes at that time.
For us, washing feet is symbolic of our role in the body of Christ.
Fr Mark explained more about the Easter message and gave the whole community an Easter Blessing.

Compton Park Road Update

Parents and visitors will have noticed the improvements that have recently been made to the road through Compton Park.

As part of these improvements the City of Wolverhampton Council has installed a new “Tiger Crossing”. This combines a pedestrian Zebra with a crossing for people on bikes. They are called “Tiger” because early versions had yellow stripes on black tarmac. The Tiger Crossing works in the same way as a Zebra Crossing. Drivers should pay particular attention to cyclists or pedestrians approaching and give way to if they wish to cross.

As part of the ongoing works yellow lines have been installed along parts of the road. Double yellow lines indicate a prohibition of waiting at any time. You MUST NOT wait or park, or stop to set down and pick up passengers on yellow lines.

These restrictions will be strictly enforced by City of Wolverhampton Council Parking Wardens and West Midlands Police.

City Trampolining Competition 2016

This term, fourteen students from St Edmund’s went to Highfields School to compete in the first City Trampolining Competition. There were three sections and the prescribed routines reflected this in terms of difficulty. All performers only had one chance to perform their routine so it had to be correct, performed at height and with good body shape. Mrs Cartlidge was proud of all participants for their efforts in training beforehand and their performances on the day. Well done!

Music Students Watch BBC’s Ten Pieces

On Wednesday 20th April Mr Bard and Mrs Curtis accompanied St Edmund’s Music students on a wonderful trip to the Symphony Hall in Birmingham.

Conductor Michael Seal, presenter Rachel Leach and the CBSO presented a lively hour-long guide to the orchestra, from the classical era to the sounds of today – with music drawn from the BBC Ten Pieces.

Music included Wagner, Bizet Carmem, Clyne and also the very upbeat West Bernstein West Side Story Symphonic Dances – Mambo.

Students thoroughly enjoyed the concert in the spectacular surroundings of the Symphony Hall and in particular DJ Switch was very entertaining!

Anthony said: “It was one of my favourite trips, it was amazing.”

Alex said: “It was good, very cool to see the BBC concert orchestra perform their ten pieces, fantastic experience.”

Year 8 Girls Netball Team

The year 8 girls netball team celebrated both league and cup success this season.

In the league competition, St Edmund’s came joint second and went through to the semi final on goal difference. They met a very strong Wolverhampton Grammar School team and were 3-1 down at half time, Wolverhampton Grammar School pulled away in the second half, eventually winning 12-4.

In the city tournament, St Edmund’s amassed an incredible 25 goals to come second in their group and qualify for the semi finals.

Their opponents in the semi finals were Smestow. However, despite a great effort, unfortunately St Edmund’s were unable to progress to the final.

Congratulations to the following players who have contributed to the success of the year 8 team – Sophie Abbott, Chaya Coleman, Monique Dhillon, Emma Esedebe, Kye-Leana Green, Cassidy Henshel, Shanice McGrowther, Esther Mey, Nyasha Mudzamiri and Sofiyah Sharrocks.
